It's 7:30 pm at BWI and the Sky Lounge is hoppin'! Meaning, it's half full of Seattle-bound folks sitting in rocking chairs, sleepily swaying away the four or so hours our flight has been delayed to BWI's surprisingly decent music selection.
Yes, I'm going to Seattle.
Why, you may ask? It may seem a bit out of the blue, and quite frankly it is. But really, do you expect anything less from me?
Here's the scoop. I have a friend in Seattle named Tate, also taking a gap year, who I've been wanting to visit for a while. For a number of reasons, now is the perfect time. I have no academic commitments, I'm not needed at work this month, and perhaps most persuasively, it's the off-season and I found a flight for under $300, which is easily half of what flights to the West Coast often cost!
What can I say? I'm very fortunate to be able to do such a thing. The power of a gap year! I don't care that my flight is delayed, except for that now Tate has to pick me up from the airport past midnight rather than at a friendly 8:29 pm.
Other than that, the only real difference between being on time and delayed is that instead of chasing the sunset westward in a plane through time zones, I watched it here from the totally lit Sky Lounge and was able to share this moment with you.

P.S., the sunset was pinker in real life :)
